Porsche displayed its prowess in electric hybrid technology when it recently unveiled the all-new 918 hypercar. Now it seems that the German manufacturer is set to take the electric connection a step further as it sets its eyes on pure electric technology for its future cars. This was revealed by Matthias Muller, Porsche CEO in an interview with Germany’s AutoMotorundSport. Mathias revealed that the carmaker is constantly working on developing EV technology.
This isn’t Porsche’s first brush with pure electric technology as the company had built three electric prototypes of the Boxster sports car called ‘Boxter E’. The Boxter E had a motor on each axle producing over 240bhp and a 540Nm of torque which made a dash to 100kmph possible in 5.3 seconds. The three cars were tested around the streets of Stuttgart in a pilot program three years ago, though we haven’t heard anything about these cars since.
It will be interesting to see whether Porsche decides to tackle the problem head-on and introduce the technology directly on a sports car, like with the 918, or decides to test it out first in the SUV or sedan segment. The main problem associated with electric vehicles is the additional weight of the batteries, which affects not only the performance, but also the handling of the car.
With the SLS Electric Drive, Mercedes-Benz and AMG proved that it is possible to get an electric vehicle to go fast, very fast. Porsche has the advantage of the backing of its parent company, Volkswagen. Now we’ll have to wait and watch Porsche’s take on this fast-evolving technology.
