The Excellence in Science and Technology Award at the Derby Telegraph Business Awards aims to recognise advancement and innovation. Business editor Robin Johnson speaks to category sponsor Bombardier Transportation.
SCIENCE and technology are the cornerstones of some of Derby's most successful businesses.
Our advanced manufacturing businesses, in particular, put great emphasis on these two disciplines, with research and development departments applying both to any new products.
The city is home to a number of firms making cutting-edge products. It is these companies that the Derby Telegraph Business Awards aims to recognise through the Excellence in Science and Technology Award.
The category sponsor, Bombardier Transportation, knows all too well what it takes to excel in these fields.
Its devotion to producing state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly trains at its Litchurch Lane factory led to the company securing the £1 billion Crossrail deal earlier this year.
Officials from Bombardier will be judging the Excellence in Science and Technology Award. They will be looking for entrants who produce quality products and services and strong sales and show a commitment to the innovation and sustainability of their business.
Dr Francis Paonessa, UK managing director of Bombardier, said: "We decided to sponsor the Excellence in Science and Technology Award as we feel it is closely aligned to what we do well at Bombardier. This award will recognise innovation and invention in companies that drive us towards a brighter future and we are proud to celebrate this.
"Science and technology has played a key role in the history of Derby and the county and Bombardier is keen this remains the case over the very long term."
Mr Paonessa said that, as well as being a great event, the awards would galvanise Derby's business community and push it forward to further success. He said: "Bombardier has been a central part of the Derby business community for many years and we believe the Derby Telegraph Business Awards are a great opportunity to recognise, celebrate and congratulate achievement in business across the region.
"We believe that events such as these serve as a wonderful forum in which to share ideas, contacts and best practice amongst companies of all sizes and allow us all to push forward together.
"We hope that the awards encourage new entrepreneurs to pursue their ambitions as well as providing recognition and endorsement for companies that are already realising positive results in their respective areas of industry and commerce.
"Our hope is that people go back to their businesses full of new ideas and fresh enthusiasm, ready to attack the future in inspired fashion.
"We feel that the event will remind everyone in the region what we are capable of collectively."
Mr Paonessa believes that 2014 is turning out to be a great year for Derby businesses – particularly those involved in his sector.
He said: "It's a great time to be part of the business community in the region and an excellent time to be part of the rail sector. Here in Derby, Bombardier sits within the largest cluster of rail companies in the world, employing more than 25,000 people in the East Midlands and contributing £2.6 billion to the local economy.
"This year, Bombardier is both celebrating an excellent tradition of 175 years of rail manufacture in Derby, as well as investing in the future with its graduate and apprentice programmes.
"Also, in the 175th year of train manufacture in Derby, we are delighted to have secured the contract to deliver the new fleet of trains for Crossrail and will be supported by the local supply chain, so the future looks bright."
