Clariant and Siemens to commercialise SGS technology

Swiss speciality chemicals firm Clariant has signed a deal with Siemens Fuel Gasification Technology to commercialise the jointly developed sour gas shift (SGS) technology for coal gasification.
Under the deal, Clariant will be the exclusive catalyst supplier for all Siemens gasification integrated SGS projects.
The companies will primarily focus on commercialising the technology in the Chinese market where there is a huge demand for coal-to-chemical projects.
Through its optimisation and simplification of total plant concepts, the SGS technology is claimed to help reduce costs for coal-to-chemical and IGCC applications.
The entrained-flow Siemens Fuel Gasifier (SFG) is said to produce synthesis gas from various fuels even with low-grade coal.
Clariant said that its ShiftMax 821 catalyst allows a simple process and requires no adjustments for the exit gas from the gasifier.
The layout, which uses smaller and fewer reactors, requires no steam adjustment for temperature control, and helps reduce up to 20% capital expenditure for the shift system and optimise operating costs with up to 30% lower catalyst volume, the company claims.

Gasification is the process of converting coal, refinery residues or other low-grade fuels into products such as electricity, chemicals or clean fuels.
