Conference of rural scientists gets under way
Rural technology and traditional knowledge should be included in the science and technology syllabus in the State, noted social activist and energy expert R.V.G. Menon has said.
He was addressing a conference of rural scientists at the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi, on Thursday. More than 50 rural scientists are participating in the conference organised by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) in association with the KFRI.
“We give more importance to western knowledge than our traditional knowledge. In addition to creative satisfaction, the rural scientists should also try for commercial success of their inventions. The efforts should benefit society. Various media should be utilised to take the results of the researches to common man,” Mr. Menon said.
Kuncheria P. Isaac, Vice Chancellor of Kerala Technological University, called for a database about rural inventors and their inventions. The social media should provide such platforms. There should be forums to take the informal research results to the people, he said. There should be a link between the rural researchers and the formal colleges and research institutes, he added.
Inventions by rural scientists, who do not have formal technical education, will be displayed at the three-day conference. The display includes solar pump without battery, harvesting machine for cocoa, multi-purpose tree climber and wheel chair that can be operated with the tongue.
KSCSTE executive vice president Suresh Das, director George Varghese, biodiversity committee senior programme coordinator S. Rajasekharan, KFRI director-in-charge P.G. Latha, KFRI registrar K. Satheesh Kumar, research coordinator E.A. Jaison and programme convenor V.P . Raveendran participated in the inaugural meeting.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will address the valedictory on March 21. He will present the award for Best Rural Technology at the function.
